Micardis belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists, explains Drugs.com. The medication decreases certain chemicals in the body that cause the constriction of blood vessels. Drugs.com states that this prevents sodium and fluid from being retained in the kidneys, which decreases blood pressure. Micardis is prescribed to treat high blood pressure, also called hypertension. As with any medication, Micardis has the potential for side effects.
Less Serious Side Effects
Most individuals experience few, if any side effects while using Micardis. The most common side effects are considered mostly harmless. Drugs.com identifies the mild consequences of Micardis to be a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, back pain, stomach pain, dizziness, fatigue, weakness or increased sweating. RxList.com indicates that some individuals may develop an upper respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, pharyngitis, abdominal pain, stomach upset, diarrhea, acid reflux, indigestion and leg cramps.
Serious Side Effects
Drugs.com warns of the following side effects: feeling faint, painful urination, difficulty urinating, chest pain, shortness of breath with minimal exertion and/or the swelling in the hands or feet. These side effects are serious and require the discontinuation of Micardis and a visit to your doctor. RxList.com mentions other side effects, including diabetes, gout, arthritis, myalgia, anxiety, depression, nervousness, fungal infection, skin abscess, eye infection, asthma, dermatitis, eczema, ear infection, conjunctivitis, earache or visual abnormalities.
Allergic Reaction
Individuals with a sensitivity or allergy to the medication may experience mild to severe symptoms of allergic reaction. Drugs.com warns that medical attention is necessary for hives, trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat. These symptoms can lead to asphyxiation as the airways become blocked.
Rare Complications or Hazards
It is rare, but Micardis can cause a condition responsible for breaking down the skeletal muscle tissue, contributing to kidney failure. Symptoms that precede this condition may include muscle pain, muscle tenderness, muscle weakness, fever, nausea, vomiting and/or dark colored urine.
RxList.com indicates other rare side effects that may be serious are possible with Micardis treatment. They include insomnia, impotence, migraine, gas and/or constipation. See your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
