One of the main components of weight loss is water. Consuming enough water whether hot or cold will aid in the weight loss process. Drinking water alone will not cause weight loss; this must be combined with a healthy diet and exercise plan.

Hot or Cold

Hot water stimulates the digestive system making it easier for you to digest food. It also helps to improve blood circulation. You do not need to drink hot water but the closer it is to your body temperature the better it will be for you.

Thermogenetics Effect

The heat or energy generated in the body during the digestion process is referred to as thermogenesis. A 2003 study published in the "Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism documented that drinking 2 cups of water increased metabolic rate by 30 percent. Approximately 40 percent of the thermogenetic effect was as a result of increasing the temperature of the water from 22 to 37 degrees Celsius.

Amount

Consuming 64 oz of water a day can help you to lose 10 lbs. in weight a year, according to MayoClinic.com. Drinking warm water with lemon can speed up the weight loss process, helping you to burn extra calories as well as cleanse your system. If you are exercising you must drink an extra 1.5 to 2.5 glasses of water each day.

Studies

WomensHealth.gov documents a 2010 study from Virginia Tech University that discovered that obese men and women who drank two glasses of water directly before meals lost approximately 30 percent more weight during a 12-week time frame then those who did not drink water before meals. The study did not mention the temperature of the water but the results suggest that drinking water does aid in the weight loss process.

Calorie Intake

Drinking excessive amounts of water will not cause the weight to drop off, to achieve these goals you must maintain a calorie deficit. There are 3,500 calories in 1 lb. of fat so to lose 1 lb. each week you will need to remove 500 calories each day from your diet or burn 500 calories each day while exercising.
