Not everyone believes that weight can be lost. Many of these naysayers are people who have tried multiple different ways of triggering weight loss and achieving the figure they covet. Repeated failures can be discouraging, but that doesn't mean you can't lose weight. Rather than because of your body, most times an inability to lose weight is the result of a poor approach.

Misconceptions

Many people who view weight loss as an unattainable goal are misled in regards to what methods can lead to effective change. This is because the marketing and advertising about weight loss programs and products often feature fad diets and other short-term methods of causing weight loss. For example, losing weight through a crash diet can cause you to lose several pounds over the course of a few days. But once your body resumes its normal habits, you'll gain the weight back. To lose weight permanently, you need to make long-term changes.

Diet

For most people, losing weight starts with diet -- if you are overweight, it is because you have consumed more calories over a period of time than your body has needed, leading to fat creation and storage on the body. You can cause weight loss to occur by reducing the number of calories consumed in a day. When your body burns more calories than come from your diet, it is forced to use stored fats to fuel your daily activity.

Exercise

Another key component to weight loss is increasing the number of calories you burn in a day. You can do exercise in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet, and it serves to stimulate your body to use a greater number of fat deposits for energy, leading to greater weight loss. Aerobic forms of exercise are the most beneficial to weight loss because you can do them for long periods of time, leading to hundreds of calories burned in a single workout.

Considerations

It isn't always necessary to make changes to both your diet and activity level to induce weight loss. However, many people require adjustments to both of these areas of your life. Even if you do lose weight only by modifying your diet or increasing your physical activity, making a habit of eating healthy foods and exercising regularly can help promote overall health, reducing your risk for a number of health conditions.
