According to the New York Times, sleep apnea -- a major cause of snoring -- can be reduced by exercises that strengthen the muscles found around your airway. Strengthening these muscles make them more reliable and not as likely to collapse during sleep. Other ways to decrease snoring include breathing strips and weight loss.

Sleeping Position Exercises

Changing your position while you sleep is an effective way to decrease snoring. Although you can practice this position change during a nap or short sleep cycle, this exercise can be implemented into your daily life almost immediately. According to the Mayo Clinic, if you sleep on your back, your tongue naturally obstructs the flow of air into your throat. This increases your chances of snoring. Moving to your side decreases this obstruction and reduces snoring. If you keep finding yourself on your back in the morning, attach a tennis ball to the back of your pajamas to keep you from rolling onto your back.

Singing

Singing consistently is an effective way to maintain strong muscle control in your throat and help reduce snoring, the Mayo Clinic says. Playing alternative instruments that test lung capacity, such as the didgeridoo, for an extended period each day can help decrease your snoring levels. Didgeridoo playing focuses specifically on the upper airway muscles in the throat.

Facial Exercises

Some facial exercises can help decrease snoring by strengthening your tongue, face and jaw muscles. Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor. Stick your tongue out of your mouth as far as you can and hold this position for several seconds. Perform this exercise until fatigued. Or, push your tongue out and try to touch your nose. Or try holding a smile for extended periods.

Fitness Exercises

Excess body fat can cause additional fat to form around the throat muscles, narrowing your airway and increasing your chances of snoring. As a result, performing physical exercise for 30 minutes to an hour each day can help you reduce weight and indirectly help decrease your snoring. Improving your diet and decreasing your caloric intake will also help you lose weight. Exercises that help you lose weight are often aerobic exercises, such as running or jumping rope.
