Side Effects of Flixonaise Nasal Spray

Flixonaise is a international brand name for nasal sprays that contain fluticasone. In the United States, a similar formulation is Flonase. These sprays are used to treat rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal passage and sinuses). Flixonaise can be used to treat rhinitis caused by seasonal allergies and rhinitis that is present year-round. Fluticasone belongs to a class of chemicals called corticosteroids, which work by decreasing inflammation.

Common Side Effects

Flixonaise does have some fairly common side effects, though these adverse effects are usually mild. The most common involve the nose itself, as some patients experience a burning sensation in the nasal passages. Others develop nosebleeds or have runny noses, potentially with bloody mucus. Others patients taking Flixonaise experience a headache or gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. These side effects can be uncomfortable but unless they are severe, they are not a reason to stop taking Flixonaise or contact your physician.

Allergic Side Effects

Flixonaise can cause certain allergic side effects, especially because it is inhaled and comes into contact with the mucous membranes in the nose. In some cases, these allergic reactions can cause a stuffy nose (much like seasonal allergies) or skin problems (such as a rash, hives, or itching). Another potential allergic side effect is swelling of either the extremities (hands and feet) or the face and mouth. Some patients have a severe reaction that causes difficulty breathing and swallowing, as well as hoarseness and chest tightness. If you experience a strong allergic reaction, stop taking Flixonaise and tell your doctor.

Serious Side Effects

Some of the side effects that Flixonaise can cause are serious. Stop taking Flixonaise and call your doctor if you develop flu-like symptoms, white patches in your mouth, or easy bruising or bleeding (especially menstrual). Also be alert for problems with your vision (such as blurring) and fatigue or extreme muscle weakness. Other serious adverse effects include an enlarged neck or face and the sudden appearance of acne. Flixonaise may also stunt the growth of children, although it is not known if it causes an overall reduction in their height.
