South Beach Supercharged Diet

"South Beach Diet Supercharged" is a book that combines the original South Beach Diet program with new ideas for meal planning and physical activity. The program promises to increase your metabolism so you can overcome weight-loss plateaus and become healthier. Get your doctor's approval before starting any exercise program or weight-loss diet.

Basic South Beach Diet

Cardiologist Arthur Agatston designed the South Beach Diet, a commercial program that encourages you to limit carbohydrates and eat six times a day to lose weight, reduce your hunger and eliminate sugar cravings. During Phase 1, you can eat lean protein, some low-fat milk and yogurt, some vegetables, eggs and healthy fats, but no fruit, alcohol, sweets or grains. Later, you can add in fruits, whole grains and more vegetables. You get your meal plan once you sign up for the diet.

Supercharged Additions

Exercise physiologist Dr. Joseph Signorile worked with Agatston to design "South Beach Diet Supercharged," which has phase-specific workouts that you use during the corresponding phases of the original South Beach Diet. The workouts are supposed to be time-efficient with an emphasis on quality. "South Beach Diet Supercharged" encourages the same food choices as the regular South Beach Diet, but the book also includes new recipes and tips for eating at restaurants while staying on the diet.

Exercise Program

In each phase, you alternate days of cardio interval training with core functional training. Cardio interval training on "South Beach Diet Supercharged" means that you walk for 20 minutes while you switch between fast walking, to increase your heart rate, and slower walking for recovery. The total body workout works multiple muscles at once and emphasizes your core strength for better posture and balance while you tone your arms and legs. The South Beach Diet says that this 20-minute workout program will give you faster results than you most likely get from one hour per day of your regular exercise.

Considerations

"South Beach Diet Supercharged" is a convenient program if you are following the South Beach Diet because it complements the diet's phases. The exercise program accommodates different levels of fitness by including modifications to make the exercises more challenging, and another benefit is that the book has new recipes to help you stick to the diet without becoming bored. Be wary of exercise programs that promise better results in less time, especially since authorities, such as Health.gov, suggest a goal of at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity, or more for weight control. Only start "South Beach Diet Supercharged" if you have medical approval.
