Ranitidine Side Effects

Ranitidine belongs to a family of drugs referred to as histamine-2 blockers. It is used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, along with conditions in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Although beneficial for most, it is also accompanied by various side effects which you may want to consider before using ranitidine.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include a headache, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Some patients also experience constipation, nausea, rashes or vomiting.

Serious Side Effects

If you experience any of the more serious side effects, you need to report them to your doctor as soon as possible. These side effects include confusion, tachycardia ( a fast heart rate), angioedema (swelling of your mouth and throat), agitation, or a slower heart rate (bradycardia). Other serious side effects include hallucinations, depression and arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythm).

Rare Side Effects

Rare side effects of ranitidine include dizziness, muscle or joint pain, pneumonia, vertigo (a spinning sensation), hair loss, drowsiness, blurred vision or insomnia.

Signs of Liver Damage

According to eMedTV.com, ranitidine may cause liver damage. Signs of this include darkened urine, jaundice (a yellowing of your skin and eyes) or pain in the upper-right area of your abdomen.

Signs of Overdose

Signs of taking too much of this medication include lack of coordination, fainting and feeling light-headed. If you experience any of these, seek emergency medical attention.

Signs of Allergic Reaction

Call 911 immediately if you develop an unexplained rash, suddenly experience a swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, begin itching excessively, develop a sudden onset of the hives or find it difficult to breathe or swallow.
