Herbs for Adrenal Fatigue

Although not recognized or diagnosed by conventional practitioners, adrenal fatigue is real and commonly afflicts those under stress. Healing the adrenal glands involves, in the first instance, addressing the underlying cause of adrenal insufficiency, which is lifestyle. As an individual makes lifestyle changes however, he may need to include supplements in his healing regimen. This article focuses on herbs that can support and heal tired adrenals.

Licorice

Licorice root not only helps heal the adrenal glands but also decreases symptoms of adrenal fatigue. Licorice slows the metabolism of certain hormones (including adrenal hormones) in the liver, thus alleviating to some degree the adrenal glands' burden of production. In addition, licorice has been shown to increase energy and endurance and reduce the intensity of symptoms of low blood sugar. One possible side effect of licorice supplementation is increased blood pressure. Because low blood pressure is common among those with adrenal fatigue, licorice may help to raise levels to a more normal level. However, if you have both adrenal fatigue and high blood pressure, consult your physician before taking it. Licorice is available in several forms, including tea, extract, capsule and powder. If you're taking a capsule the recommended dose is 250 to 500 mg three times daily.

Siberian Ginseng

Siberan ginseng also helps strengthen the adrenals while minimizing symptoms of insufficiency. This herb increases resistance to stress, sustains energy levels and normalizes blood sugar levels while decreasing anxiety, irritability and lethargy. The recommended dose is 100 mg of a standard extract twice per day (morning and afternoon).

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha falls in a special category of herbs known as adaptogens that help normalize hormone levels and other substances in the body. Sometimes the person with adrenal fatigue will have low adrenal hormone output most of the day but excessive secretion at night. Adaptogens can stimulate hormone production when there's a deficiency and lower production when there's an excess. Ashwagandha exerts this balancing effect on adrenal hormones and is quite beneficial for those with adrenal fatigue. Excessive doses of ashwagandha (more than 35 grams a day) may inhibit adrenal function.

Ginger

Ginger is another adaptogen that helps to normalize adrenal hormone levels and blood pressure as well as increase energy levels. Ginger may be used in supplement form or consumed fresh in food.
