The Side Effects of Chuan Xin Lian

Chuan xin lian, more commonly known as andrographis, is a plant indigenous to South Asia. Traditionally, the leaves and root of this plant are used to treat fevers and infections, including the common cold. However, the safety and effectiveness of chuan xin lian have not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Discuss the side effects of chuan xin lian with your medical provider before beginning treatment with this natural supplement.

Upset Stomach

Mild stomach irritation may develop after taking a dose of chuan xin lian. For this reason, you may experience nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite. You may also develop diarrhea, which can be disruptive and may cause cramping, pain or bloating. A bitter, metallic taste may develop in your mouth after taking this supplement. Consider eating a small snack or meal before taking a dose of chuan xin lian to limit or prevent the onset of stomach-related side effects. If stomach discomfort becomes chronic or severe, consult your doctor.

Flulike Side Effects

Chuan xin lian supplementation may induce flulike side effects. You may experience headache pain, increased fatigue, skin rash or swollen lymph glands. Fatigue and headache pain may make it difficult for you to remain focused and attentive during your normal daily activities. Though these side effects of chuan xin lian are typically temporary, seek care from your physician if they do not subside.

Hypersensitive Reaction

Infrequently, a hypersensitive reaction may occur following exposure to chuan xin lian. A serious allergic reaction may cause hives, facial swelling, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, weakness or wheezing. Contact an emergency medical provider if any of these hypersensitive reaction symptoms arise. In the absence of appropriate medical care, an allergic reaction may cause life-threatening health complications.

Medication Interactions

Treatment with chuan xin lian may not be appropriate for you if you're taking certain medications. Avoid taking this supplement in conjunction with medication indicated for high blood pressure. When combined, these treatments may cause a significant drop in your blood pressure. Severely low blood pressure may cause dizziness, blurred vision, headache and loss of consciousness. Chuan xin lian treatment should also be avoided if you're taking an anticoagulant, including aspirin or warfarin. This treatment combination may increase your risk of developing bruising or bleeding complications. Additionally, do not take chuan xin lian if you're receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Chuan xin lian may boost the activity of your immune system, which could counteract the effects of immunosuppressants.
