Kundalini yoga was introduced in the West in the 1960s by Yogi Bhajan, a spiritual leader from India. He developed the kundalini style to teach people how to become more aware of themselves and their energy and help them reject the drug use common during that era. The word "kundalini" means "that which is coiled" in Sanskrit, and it describes the life force that yogis believe is coiled up like a snake in your body, waiting to be awakened through yoga practice.

'Kundalini Yoga: The Flow of Eternal Power'

Shakti Pawha Kaur Khalsa, the first woman to study with Yogi Bhajan, wrote a comprehensive illustrated guide to Kundalini Yoga published by Penguin in 1998, entitled "Kundalini Yoga: The Flow of Eternal Power: A Simple Guide to the Yoga of Awareness." The first section, called "Things to Know," contains chapters on chakras, mantras, stress, breath and happiness. The second section, "Things to Try," provides detailed explanations on chanting, breathing exercises and recipes.

'Kundalini Rising: Exploring the Energy of Awakening'

The anthology "Kundalini Rising: Exploring the Energy of Awakening" was published in 2009 by Sounds True of Boulder, Colorado. Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, Ken Wilber, Swami Radha, Gopi Krishna and John White are credited as the main authors, and several others contribute to the four sections of the book. Part one, "The Experience," assembles personal stories written by practitioners of kundalini. Part two, "Kundalini and Health," contains scientific research. "Kundalini at Large" has writings on the context of kundalini, and "Kundalini in Motion" is a collection of the feelings of yogis who practice this style.

'Introduction to Kundalini Yoga'

"Introduction to Kundalini Yoga: With the Kundalini Yoga Sets and Meditations of Yogi Bhajan" was written by Gururattan Kaur Khalsa. and Ann Marie Maxwell. This book, published in 1989 by Yoga Technology, provides a thorough introduction to kundalini yoga and a description of its benefits. The three main sections of this book cover sets, which are specific groups of kundalini yoga exercises, meditations and breathing.

'Kundalini Yoga: Unlock Your Inner Potential Through Life-Changing Exercise'

"Kundalini Yoga: Unlock Your Inner Potential Through Life-Changing Exercise" was published in 2000. This illustrated instructional book was written by Shakta Kaur Khalsa and contains a foreword by Gurucharan Singh Kalsa, director of training for the Kundalini Research Institute. Chapters discuss basics, warm-ups, specific yoga sets called kriyas, relaxation and meditation techniques, and healing foods to make.
