5 Things You Need to Know About Candidiasis Treatment

1. The Cause of Candidiasis

Candidiasis, or a yeast infection, is most commonly caused by a microscopic fungi, or yeast called candida albicans. While the most common form of yeast infection is a vaginal infection, yeast infections can cause skin irritations on any moist area of the body, such as the belly button, under the breasts, in the armpits, under a diaper or on the inner thighs. Yeast infections in the mouth are common as well, particularly in young children and adults with dentures and are known as thrush. Occasionally yeast levels in the digestive tract can become so high that they cause a condition that health practitioners refer to as yeast syndrome. Yeast syndrome can cause fatigue, mood swings, headaches, difficulty concentrating and in extreme cases, even death.

2. The Bacteria You Want in Your Body

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria which help to combat the excessive production of yeast in the body, and are a great preventative and curative treatment for candidiasis. Probiotics can be found in yogurt cultures or can be purchased in supplement form. It is a good idea to take probiotics during and after treatment with antibiotics, which kill both good and bad bacteria. Replenishing the healthy bacteria level in your body simply with the use of probiotics may be all you need to treat a mild case of candidiasis. Always follow the manufacturer's directions for dosage information.

3. Starve the Yeast

Yeast thrives on sugar as well as starchy carbohydrates which are turned into sugars within the body. By avoiding fermented or fungal foods as well as sugars and starches you can help to treat candidiasis by literally starving the yeast. Fermented and fungal foods include cheese, beer, bread, tomato paste and mushrooms. Other foods to avoid include sugar, potatoes, parsnips, corn and fruit.

4. Most Forms of Candidiasis Can be Treated at Home

There are over-the-counter medications for the most common forms of candidiasis, including thrush, diaper rash, vaginal yeast infections and skin infections. If you begin treatment as soon as possible and follow the manufacturer's directions, chances are you can clear up a case of candidiasis without the need to see a doctor. Remember that keeping your skin dry, your clothing clean and washing items such as baby pacifiers or dentures should be cleaned regularly.

5. When Candidiasis is Out of Control

If your home treatment does not show improvement after one week or you are suffering from chronic infections, it may be time to see a doctor. Depending on the type and severity of candidiasis, your doctor may recommend IV injections, creams, suppositories, lozenges or pills which can all help to eradicate yeast and heal the infection.
