Chin-ups are an effective exercise because they incorporate numerous muscles in your back, shoulders and arms. Physical fitness tests often require subjects to perform as many chin-ups as possible to demonstrate their overall body strength. For example, the conditioning coaches of the NBA's Boston Celtics expect professional players to perform at least 10 chin-ups.

Effect

Chin-ups are an excellent exercise for your back and arms. The latissimus dorsi, or lats, and biceps are the primary muscles they incorporate. Secondary muscles include the rhomboids, trapezius, serratus anterior, obliques and transverse abdominus. Vary the types of chin-ups you perform to maximize the number of muscle groups you incorporate. Chin-ups are similar to pullups, but are easier because you face your palms toward you, which allows assistance from the biceps.

Proper Form

Proper chin-up form is essential to avoid injury and to develop muscles properly. A standard chin-up requires you to place your hands roughly shoulder-width apart on the bar with your palms facing toward you. After you have a secure grip, extend your arms fully and hang with your feet off the ground. Pull yourself up so that your chin reaches the height of the bar. Hold the position for several seconds, then lower yourself. Repeat the exercise as many times as you can. Crossing your legs while you are suspended helps control body sway.

Variations

Changing your hand position on the bar affects the difficulty of the chin-up. For example, placing your hands farther apart makes the exercise more challenging. A one-armed chin-up is another difficult variation. Experienced strength trainers sometimes use a dipping belt, which is a device that allows you to attach weight plates to your body to increase the intensity of chin-ups. Another option is to hold a dumbbell with your feet. Note that beginners should not add weight to a chin-up until their form is perfect and their muscles are well-developed.

Considerations

If you want to perform chin-ups at home, install a bar in a standard doorway. Some models attach to the interior of a doorframe with long screws. Other models hook over the molding on top of the door, making them suitable for temporary installations. Whichever model you choose, follow the directions carefully to ensure that the bar is secure and stable.
