How the Program Works
The Weight Watchers program provides a system for determining and calculating how many calories you should consume per day in order to restore your optimum weight level. As long as consumption remains in your predetermined points level any food can be eaten. The points formula has been upgraded and revised to factor in the fact that, "calorie-counting has become unhelpful," Weight Watcher's International President and CEO, David Kirchhoff points out. Weight Watchers points system is designed to designate an allotted amount of points per day based on more than just calories. They take nutritional value into account when determining point values of foods.
The Points System
Your assigned Weight Watchers coach determines how many points you are allowed to consume daily. Every food and beverage has a points value. Points are determined according to the saturated and trans fat and calorie content of products along with portion size. You are not informed of the exact formula used to calculate points when you are in the program. Generally, the more calories and fat content foods contain the more points they are assigned. When your personal points are allotted you simply keep track of the points value of the foods and drinks you consume throughout the day so you do not exceed your daily points allowance.
Foods With Low Points
Weight Watchers assigns lower points for healthier foods like whole grains, lean protein, fruits and non-starchy vegetables, which allows you to consume higher quantities. Weight Watchers provides lists of recommended foods that are low in points such as unsalted dry-roasted nuts, fat-free soup broth, dried whole-wheat pasta and chicken sausage. The diet also gives value to physical exercise to promote overall healthy habits.
Compatibility With Other Diets
Weight Watchers does not have a food list that details what foods can and cannot be consumed. Anything can be eaten as long as the diet is charted, according to the points system. This diet is compatible with other diet programs such as low-carbohydrate diets and balanced diets as long as you still follow the basic framework of the Weight Watcher's program. Weight Watchers points will determine the quantity of food that can be consumed on another diet. The additional diet plan can be used to determine the food that you consume.
