Sertraline is the generic name for an antidepressant which belongs to a family of drugs referred to as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is used to treat a variety of disorders, including panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorder. While effective at relieving the symptoms of these conditions, sertraline is also accompanied by some unpleasant side effects you should be aware of before using it as part of your treatment plan.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effects associated with sertraline as reported by eMedTV.com include nausea, diarrhea, dizziness and fatigue. You may also experience indigestion, loss of appetite and suffer from insomnia. In addition, men may find they have problems ejaculating. Dry mouth, drowsiness and tremors are also common.
Less Common Side Effects
Less common side effects, which occur in approximately 2 percent of those taking sertraline, include increased perspiration, body pain, weight loss, constipation and hot flashes. Some patients also experience a condition known as parasthesia (a burning or tingling sensation over the body), or suffer from frequent headaches. Abdominal pain, changes in vision and feeling nervous may also occur.
Common Side Effects in Children
While most side effects are the same for both children and adults, some side effects have a tendency to occur more in children. These include fever, loss of bladder control, sinus infections, purpura (red or purple discoloration of the skin), aggressiveness, hyperactivity and bloody noses.
Serious Side Effects
Although these occur only on occasion, side effects deemed serious need to be reported to your doctor immediately if they occur. These include suicidal thoughts, hostility, severe mood swings, confusion, extreme nausea, diarrhea or constipation, changes in blood pressure, high fever accompanied by sweating or shivering, agitation and seizures. Hallucinations, a rapid heart rate and an irregular heart rhythm are also signs of a serious health problem.
Signs of Overdose
Signs of a sertraline overdose include extreme dizziness, nausea and vomiting, rapid heartbeat, confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness and tremors. The experts at Drugs.com suggest seeking emergency medical treatment if you notice any of these conditions.
