Yeast infections, also known as candidiasis, is an infection that can develop in your mouth, skin, vagina, urinary tract and stomach. Yeast infections are caused by a fungus known as Candida albicans. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that most women develop a yeast infection at some point during their lifetimes. Herbs and other natural treatments are often used to treat yeast infections. Discuss the use of herbs with your family doctor before using these substances.

About Yeast Infections

Several common signs and symptoms are associated with yeast infections, including white patches in your mouth or throat, cracking of the skin at the corners of your mouth, rashes in your groin and between your fingers and toes, and vaginal itching. If you have a vaginal yeast infection, you may also experience vaginal discharge that resembles cottage cheese. Yeast infections may be caused by certain medications, pregnancy, excessive body weight and bacterial infections.

Commonly Used Herbs

Certain herbs are commonly used in treating yeast infections. Some of the best herbs for this condition are herbs that possess anti-fungal properties. Naturopathic physician and herbalist Sharol Tilgner, author of "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," states that paracress, pau d'arco, usnea, Oregon grape, thyme and lomatium possess anti-fungal action and help modulate your immune system. These herbs are especially effective in treating infections of your vagina, mouth and skin. Other beneficial herbs may include garlic, echinacea, tea tree oil and pomegranate.

Featured Herb

Oregon grape is a frequently prescribed herb for yeast infections. In her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," certified nutritional consultant and nutrition researcher Phyllis A. Balch notes that the roots of the Oregon grape plant contain tannins and berberine -- a substance with known antimicrobial action -- and are helpful in treating skin conditions and cleansing your blood and liver. Oregon grape has anti-fungal action, stimulates your digestive system and may be used as a gentle laxative.

Warning

Although yeast infections are relatively common, seek treatment for your health problem as soon as possible. Avoid ingesting herbs without first speaking with a qualified health care professional. A naturopathic physician or medical doctor trained in botanical medicine can provide you with important and helpful information about how best to use herbs, what herbs to incorporate into your yeast infection treatment plan and the appropriate duration of treatment for herbal medicines.
