Exercise is important for people of all ages, including teens. According to the Weight Control Information Network, regular exercise can reduce anxiety and depression in teens, as well as reduce body fat, build muscle and help teens control their weight. Regular exercise also lessens the chances of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Teens who work out regularly are also more likely to do well in school and have good self-esteem. Before starting a workout regimen, talk to your doctor to make sure you are in good enough health to exercise.
Best Exercises for Teens
Whatever exercise you like best is a good place to start. Aerobic activities such as running, swimming, dancing and biking are all great for working out. You can work out alone at home, or with the help of a workout video for teens. Some gyms also have aerobic or dance classes just for teenagers. Finding a friend to workout with you can make exercise more fun and help you stay motivated. Muscle strengthening exercises are also good, like yoga, rock climbing or lifting weights.
How Much to Exercise
GirlsHealth.gov recommends that teens get at least 60 minutes of physical activity almost every day, with a minimum of three days per week. If you don't have a full hour at a time to work out, break your workout up, for example, a half hour of exercise in the morning and another 30 minutes in the evening.
Mix Your Routines Up
To keep things interesting and to work on different areas of your body, mix up your workout routines. For example, if you plan to workout five days per week, your schedule might be something like this: Monday and Wednesday you could run or walk three or four miles. Tuesday and Thursday could be yoga and weight training, and Friday you could work out to a dance workout DVD.
Experiment
The key to sticking with a workout routine is to find exercise that you enjoy. Working out doesn't have to entail buying expensive equipment or gym memberships, you can jump rope for a half hour and get a good workout, or go for a long walk around your neighborhood.
