How to Speed Your Metabolism in the Office

When people refer to their need to speed up their metabolism, they are referring to increasing their energy level. This can be done with diet and exercise, but during the workday, the time or resources to do so can be scarce. Integrating simple changes into your routine can speed up your metabolism.

Step 1

Avoid the vending machine. The majority of snack offerings contain significant amounts of sugar and fat, which have the opposite effect to the one you seek. If you must, choose plain nuts or a low-sodium, low-sugar trail mix.

Step 2

Package healthy snacks and take them with you to work. Almonds, dried fruit, yogurt or bananas have been shown to contribute to boosts in energy. Generally low in calories when eaten in the recommended serving size, these foods keep you feeling full.

Step 3

Incorporate exercise into your breaks. If you work in an office, you may take only two breaks of approximately 10 minutes throughout the day. Instead of making a coffee run, drink some water and go for a brisk walk. Water keeps you hydrated, which supports healthy energy levels. In addition, incorporating small bursts of activity into your day can leave you feeling energized instead of tired or sluggish.

Step 4

Increase your activity level by standing more throughout the day. Many people who work in offices sit for a majority of the day because they work at a computer, are on the phone or attend a number of meetings. If you are on a conference call or are on hold, stand while you are on the phone. For an added bonus, do simple squats while you wait. These will increase your heart rate and your energy level. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, and then bend at the knees as if you are sitting in a chair. Do not let your knees go farther than your toes. Repeat 10 to 15 times.
