The Total Gym is a multiple exercise home gym marketed by Fitness Quest through TV infomercials. Though many other fitness gimmicks that are advertised on late-night TV are not effective, physiologist and certified personal trainer Mike Behnken states on AsktheTrainer.com that the Total Gym can deliver a quality workout if you are looking to lose weight or tone your muscles. As of February 2011, Fitness Quest sells four different models of the Total Gym.
Total Gym 2000
The Total Gym 2000 is the most basic model of the machine. It supports up to a 250-lb. user and allows for 40 different exercise movements, mostly focusing on the upper body. Like all Total Gym models, it includes a basic exercise DVD and a lifetime warranty on the frame. The main limitation of the Total Gym 2000 compared to other models is that it does not include a squat platform used in many of the leg development exercises. As of February 2011, Fitness Quest sells the gym for about $600, and does not charge for shipping.
Total Gym 3000
The Total Gym 3000 includes a squat platform for a more complete body workout, allowing you to do more than 60 exercises. Though roughly the same size as the Total Gym 2000, the 3000 supports a user of up to 300 lbs. It also includes a wing attachment so you can add free weights to the machine, a wall poster of exercises and a 90-day warranty on all parts in addition to the lifetime frame warranty. The Total Gym 3000 costs around $850 as of February 2011.
Total Gym XLS
The most advanced home model of the Total Gym is the XLS. It supports up to 400-lbs. and includes all of the features found in the Total Gym 3000. Additionally, the 3000 has a wider backrest that is fully padded and a larger squat platform. The XLS system includes three additional workout DVDs, a comprehensive nutrition guide to boost your workout results, an additional leg pulley accessory and improved hand straps for additional comfort. As of February 2011, Fitness Quest has marked down the Total Gym XLS 50 percent from its retail price, and is selling it for $974.
Total Gym GTS
The Total Gym GTS is the commercial version of the Total Gym designed for use at health clubs by personal trainers and rehabilitation specialists. Solidly built from steel, the gym can support up to 650 lbs. for its more than 200 exercises. It has the thickest padding and most workout accessories available of any Total Gym product. It contains eight resistance levels that range from 5 to 59 percent of the user's bodyweight, and the pulley system is fully enclosed. The Total Gym GTS retails for $2,895 as of February 2011.
