Lotrel, also known as amlodipine and benazepril, belongs to a family of drugs referred to as calcium channel blockers. It is used to treat high blood pressure and according to Drugs.com, is generally used when other medications have not been successful. Along with its benefits are side effects, which should be taken into careful consideration before using this medication.
Common Side Effects
As reported by eMedTV.com, the most common side effects you may experience with Lotrel include the development of a cough, unexplained swelling and becoming dizzy. You may also suffer from headaches and develop a condition known as hyperkalemia which causes high levels of potassium to be present in the blood.
Serious Side Effects
Although infrequent, there is always a chance you may suffer from one of the more serious side effects of Lotrel. These include swelling of your hands and/or feet, uncontrollable itching, wheezing and suffering from fainting spells. You may also display symptoms that suggest you have an infection such as a fever or sore throat, a decrease in the amount of urine you produce and a weak pulse. Blisters may appear and your skin may begin to peel, you may suffer from stomach pain without any vomiting and find your heartbeat is becoming irregular.
Rare Side Effects
According to eMedTV.com, these side effects occur in less than 1 percent of those taking Lotrel; however you may still find yourself suffering from one or more of them. They include fatigue, insomnia, decreased libido (sex drive), constipation, heartburn, back pain and hair loss. Your blood pressure may become dangerously low, you may find yourself suffering from anxiety, experience dry mouth, diarrhea, heartburn, and men may have a sudden onset of impotence (the inability to achieve and maintain an erection).
Signs of Overdose
There are few symptoms of overdose with Lotrel; however, if you experience either of them, seek emergency medical attention. They include extreme dizziness, light-headedness or fainting.
Signs of Allergic Reaction
As with any medication, there is always a possibility that you may suffer an allergic reaction. Signs include tongue, throat, face and lips swelling, tightness of your chest or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing and a sudden onset of hives or an unexplained rash.
