Herbal treatments for a healthy heart often involve improving the circulation and lowering blood pressure. Several herbs are reputed for their efficacy in strengthening the heart and the circulatory system; however, herbs can produce side effects, so consult your health care practitioner before using herbal remedies to ensure your safety.
Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo biloba helps thin the platelets and dilate blood vessels, working to improve the body's circulation, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The leaves of the ginkgo tree are high in terpenoids and flavonoids, antioxidants that may reduce blood pressure and prevent heart disease, adds UMMC. In addition to strengthening your heart, ginkgo has shown effectiveness in improving the memory and stimulating cognitive function due to its ability to increase circulation to the head. Ginkgo supplements are available in health food stores.
Rauwolfia Serpentina
Rauwolfia serpentina has been used by herbalists for the treatment of high blood pressure, especially when it is the result of stress or anxiety, according to the University of Michigan Health System. Rauwolfia serpentina is high in the alkaloid respirine, which can cause serious side effects if not used properly. This herb is a potent heart tonic, which may be highly effective in strengthening the heart muscle; however, do not self-treat with Rauwolfia. It should only be used under the supervision of a practitioner familiar with its properties.
Garlic
Garlic may be effective for the treatment of high blood pressure in certain people. Garlic contains compounds that are potentially able to prevent blood clots and reduce cholesterol, improving heart health, according to "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook." Professor Guautnter Siegel, M.D., of the University of Medicine in Berlin, reports that garlic removes the preliminary form of plaque in the arteries, known as nanoplaque, and may prevent artherosclerosis. The benefits of garlic are best seen when it is eaten raw or consumed as an herbal tea, adds "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook." If you prefer, you can take garlic supplements, available from most health food stores.
Hawthorn
Hawthorn is a common herbal heart tonic known to strengthen the heart walls and enhance the entire cardiovascular system, according to "The Yoga of Herbs." Additionally, hawthorn may lower blood pressure in some people. Hawthorn is found in herbal blood pressure tonics and is also taken on its own as an herbal extract, either in liquid or powdered form. It is available at most health food stores. Do not self-treat with hawthorn, as it can produce serious side effects. This herb should only be taken under the supervision of a practitioner familiar with its properties.
