Serious Side Effects

The following side effects are very serious, and if you experience any of them, call your doctor within 24 hours of the symptoms: nausea that interferes with your ability to eat; vomiting or diarrhea that occurs 4-to-6 times within a 24-hour period; fatigue that is so extreme that you cannot function in your daily activities; swelling of the feet or ankles; or if you cannot eat or drink anything over a 24-hour period.

Precautions and Self-Care

Before you start treatment with Erbitux, inform your health care team about any other medications you are taking, over-the-counter and prescription, to avoid adverse reactions. Drinking at least two quarts of fluid a day and washing your hands frequently may help lower your risk of infection and alleviate some side effects, according to chemocare.com. Eating well, getting rest and avoiding sun exposure can also help while being treated with this medication. Constipation may be a side effect of Erbitux, and keeping hydrated or using a stool softener--with your doctor's approval--can help keep your bowels moving regularly. If any symptoms or side effects occur that are bothersome, talk to your health care team about ways to manage your symptoms and maintain your quality of life while on Erbitux.
