Menstruation is a natural monthly occurrence for females that usually begins around the age of 11 and may last until menopause, which may begin to show signs as early as the age of 40. During menstruation, women may experience symptoms such as abdominal bloating, irregular bleeding, cramping, water retention, irritability, sleep disturbances, tiredness and depression, to name a few. Some over-the-counter medications may help ease symptoms that accompany menstruation; however, certain herbs that have anti-spasmodic and calming properties may also help. Speak with your doctor before using herbs to treat pain and symptoms associated with menstruation.

Causes

Once a month, one of the ovaries releases an egg that makes its way through the fallopian tube to the uterus. According to Teen Health, before ovulation occurs, the female hormone known as estrogen helps stimulate the uterus. During this process, the uterine walls are lined with blood and tissues that help make the uterus thick and cushioned. If the mature egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining is shed through the vagina. Some women may experience severe cramping due to uterine contractions during this process.

Cramp Bark

Cramp bark is an herb that can be found in Europe and eastern North America. Cramp bark contains antispasmodic properties, making it helpful in relaxing smooth muscles such as those of the uterus. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a relaxing herbal tea can be made by adding 2 tsp. of dried bark to 1 cup of boiling water and allowing it to simmer for 15 minutes. You may drink cramp bark tea up to three times a day as needed to help soothe menstrual cramps.

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh was discovered more than two centuries ago by Native Americans. Black cohosh is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, as well as plant-based estrogen-like properties. It was commonly used to relieve menstrual cramps and other symptoms, such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings and irritability associated with menstruation and menopause, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Take 40 to 80 mg of black cohosh a day to help soothe symptoms of menstruation.

Warnings

If you are currently taking prescription medications and certain over-the-counter medications, the use of herbal remedies may have adverse effects. In addition, women who are breast-feeding should not use herbs as an alternative treatment unless advised otherwise by a physician. Speak with your child's pediatrician before administering herbs to treat menstrual cramps and other symptoms.
