Hockey is a fast, exciting and highly skilled game. In order to have a chance to play the game well, you need to have excellent skating ability, and then must develop talents that include shooting, passing, receiving the puck and playing defense. A number of online programs can help you learn the game.

The Hockey Source

The Hockey Source is written from a coach's perspective and gives coaches a number of ways to reach and motivate players so they can get the most out of their abilities and become the best possible hockey players. Perhaps the best attribute of this website is the number of drills and exercises that can help players improve in game situations. This includes the Driving the Net drill, which features an offensive player who wants to take up position in front of the net and a defensive player who wants to keep that area clear. The Hockey Source points out how each player should play the drill, giving the offensive player insight on to what the defensive player is trying to do and vice-versa.

Hockey Canada

Ice hockey is Canada's national pastime, and Hockey Canada is an informative website that gives players information on all aspects of the game. It offers specific information on how players can learn the checking aspect of the game. It shows how players can get in the proper position to deliver checks while remaining in control of their skating and how to take the puck away from opponents.

USA Hockey

The popularity of hockey in the United States can be pinpointed with the United States' famous victory over the Soviet hockey team in the 1980 Winter Olympics and the subsequent gold medal. The USA hockey program ranks with Canada, Russia and Sweden as among the best in the world. The USA hockey website offers plays and drills, including a 2-on-2 tip-in drill authored by Yale University hockey coach Keith Allain. This drill tells forwards how to position their bodies and sticks while attempting tip-in shots.

Ice Hockey Systems

For coaches and players who want to have a plan for all aspects of practice and game play, the Ice Hockey Systems website offers innovative plans and detailed explanations on how to get the most out of your time. The Breakout Communication Drills explains where players should position themselves when moving up ice to start an offensive breakout play, and the proper calls to make to teammates as the play develops.
