Fibromyalgia is an idiopathic condition, which means that there is no known cause or trigger. It is characterized by chronic, widespread pain in your muscles and joints, and is frequently accompanied by fatigue, lack of physical balance, depression and loss of mental clarity, known as "fibro fog." Although supplements cannot cure fibromyalgia, they may help provide relief from the symptoms of this condition. Check with your physician before taking any supplement to address fibromyalgia symptoms.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is well known as a powerful immune system enhancer, and may help prevent bacterial and vital infections that can damage brain, nerve, muscle and connective tissue cells. It is also an antioxidant that may prevent free radical damage that can aggravate fibromyalgia symptoms, according to Phyllis Balch, C.N.C., author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Vitamin C may also boost energy levels, reducing fibromyalgia-related fatigue.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is not a vitamin, but it has effects on your body that mimic those of vitamins. Like vitamin C, CoQ10 offers antioxidant benefits, according to Balch. These supplements may improve oxygenation of muscles, brain cells and connective tissues, supplying energy for cellular repair. They may enhance blood circulation, increasing the availability of vitamins and nutrients. CoQ10 may also improve energy levels in fibromyalgia patients.
Fish Oil
Fish oil supplements, widely available in Western groceries and health food stores, contain omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids are necessary for the proper function of your brain, and may help reduce "fibro fog," which is mental confusion and lack of mental clarity associated with fibromyalgia. Omega-3 fatty acids may also help reduce inflammation of muscles and connective tissues, decreasing pain and stiffness associated with fibromyalgia, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Vitamin B-5
Vitamin B-5, also called pantothenic acid, is a B vitamin known for its ability to counter stress. It may help stimulate the production of neurotransmitters, or brain chemicals that regulate mood, alleviate anxiety and reduce the effects of depression, according to Balch. Vitamin B-5 supplements may also improve your body's ability to metabolize and use proteins and fats, enhancing cellular repair and increasing energy.
