Exercise balls, also known as fitness balls, exercise balls, or Swiss balls, are low-cost exercise tools that you can use to do a variety of exercises -- from core strengthening to cardio. However, if you're going to spend your hard-earned money on one, you need to make sure you're getting the best possible return on investment.

Exercise Ball Specs

The first step in finding the best exercise ball for you is finding the one with the correct specifications. Manufacturers sell fitness balls based on customer height, and you should be able to find the right ball based on the charts that come on the box. However, be aware that heavier users or those with unusually long legs might want to consider larger balls, such as the 85 cm ball.

Exercise Ball Materials

Exercise ball materials matter as much as proper size. The best exercise balls are made of high-quality, tear-resistant material. Most balls come with a hand-powered pump to inflate the ball; this should feel sturdy and be easy to use. The plug used to keep air in the ball should fit firmly and be difficult to remove, so that it will not come out unexpectedly. The ball surface should be free of any ridges that could trap dirt, so that you can clean it with soap and water.

Brand Recommendations

Not all fitness balls are the same. The American Council on Exercise, which publishes exercise ball reviews, recommends the BOSU Ballast Ball. This ball has a special six-sided design, which stops it from rolling out from under you during use, providing an extra element of safety. The ball also features a weight inside that slides around during use, providing more resistance. However, ACE reports this ball is a bit on the pricey side and may not work as well as standard balls for core exercises.

Safe Use

After you've chosen the best exercise ball for your needs, you'll need to take a few precautions to prevent injury. Use a hand pump, not an air compressor, to inflate your ball; air compressors produce cold air, which can expand as the ball warms up, causing over-inflation. As with all fitness equipment, read and follow all manufacturer safety instructions. These tips ensure you'll enjoy your fitness ball for years to come.
