Kundalini Yoga is designed to give you a hands-on approach to your highest consciousness. While this form of yoga is not a religion, it teaches you how to achieve the sacred purpose of your life. Kundalini Yoga is nondenominational and universal and is considered a Sacred Science made to expand your awareness. Kundalini Yoga is particularly helpful for dealing with daily challenges and stresses. Most often, help is needed with the basics of Kundalini Yoga as many people who are new to the practice have trouble getting started.

History

Kundalini Yoga, which was kept a secret for thousands of years, was passed down by oral tradition from master to disciple in India. In 1969, Yogi Bhajan revealed Kundalini Yoga to the public because he saw the reality of inner beauty, power and potential and wanted others to discover it, too. Kundalini Yoga produces results 16 times faster than traditional yoga, and its power comes from a reserve of untapped potential found within the body. The Kundalini, or internal power, is normally depicted as a coiled snake or serpent located at the base of the spine. The history of Kundalini Yoga says that by gradually and safely awakening the serpent and using its power, you will experience an elevation of consciousness, better physical well-being and expanded awareness.

Body Locks

Body locks direct the flow of the energies of the body called the prana and the apana. The energy channel running along the spine is called the sushmuna; when the apana and prana are blended together, the flow of energy is opened along the sushmuna. The function of the body locks is to create inner strength to keep the sushmuna open and to encourage energy to move freely within the channel. The physical movements required to open the body locks are the same as those used to maintain proper spinal alignment. Deepening the practice of opening the body locks can help cleanse, restore and refine the body systems.

Silence and Intuition

Silence is an art that must be developed and serves as a core to all spiritual practices. Kundalini Yoga practitioners say your experiences will be more profound if you incorporate silence into your spiritual practice. Silence allows you to turn your attention inward, which helps you relate to your "essential self" and access your intuition. One of the goals of Kundalini Yoga is to tune into the neutral mind, which is accessed through finding your intuition. It is important to differentiate sitting silently with accessing the neutral mind, since sitting silently often make you replay your thoughts and neuroses rather than finding ways to deal with them.

Breathing

The breath contains the life force, which is called prana. The rate of your breathing and your state of mind are one, so the slower you breathe, the more control you have over your mind. Breath leads the mind, and the mind leads the body, so if you control your breath, you can control both your mind and body. The average rate of breathing is 16 times per minute. When the rate of breathing increases, the mind may become erratic and disassociated. A breathing rate of 8 breaths each minute helps you feel more relaxed and relieves stress and increases your mental awareness. A rate of 4 breaths per minute gives you a positive shift in mental function, intense feelings of visual clarity, awareness and a heightened sensitivity of the body.
