Inflammation and water retention are both very common symptoms, and they may point to any of several conditions that range tremendously in degree and severity. For this reason, it is important to consult a qualified practitioner any time that you experience unexplained symptoms. With your physician's approval, you might consider using certain naturopathic supplements to provide temporary relief from inflammation and water retention.

Bromelain

An enzyme derived from pineapple, bromelain has been used for decades to relieve inflammation and pain. Bromelain in the form of meat tenderizer is a popular home remedy for inflammation associated with arthritis, insect bites, jellyfish stings and other sources of localized pain. According to the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus website, bromelain supplements may help to treat pain, swelling, sinusitis and digestive diseases caused by inflammation. However, there is not enough compelling evidence to prove its efficacy.

Willow Bark

White willow is one of the world's oldest and most respected supplements for inflammation. In fact, this product has been used since the time of Hippocrates and its pharmaceutical extract is a leading inflammation treatment. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that willow bark contains salicin acid, a compound nearly identical to acetylsalicylic acid --- also known as aspirin. Willow bark appears to relieve inflammatory back pain, burstitis, arthritis and tendonitis.

Dandelion Root

The root of the dandelion plant contains compounds with diuretic, or fluid-flushing, properties. According to the UMMC, dandelion root increases the frequency with which a person urinates, thereby helping to reduce fluid retention and its effects. Unlike most diuretics, dandelion actually replenishes, rather than depleting, levels of potassium. This key electrolyte helps to regulate fluid balance and is essential for overall human health.

Black Tea

This powerful medicinal herb is the same plant used to make "regular" tea. MedlinePlus acknowledges black tea's widespread use as a treatment for both inflammation and fluid retention. Because black tea contains caffeine, a known diuretic, it can be useful for preventing fluid buildup. Although there is no strong scientific evidence to prove its effectiveness as a treatment for inflammation, black tea has been used historically to treat inflammation in the joints, tendons and bowels.
