It is normal for teenagers to struggle with their body image and weight --- particularly teenage girls. Weight and overall health are important considerations, especially when childhood obesity is at an all-time high and puts young people at an increased risk for diabetes and other conditions. A healthy weight should be every teen's goal, but parents should be aware of how their children perceive their body and diet efforts because unhealthy views can lead to serious disorders.

Portion Sizing

According to the website TeensHealth, one way teens can approach weight loss is by reducing the amount of food they consume. Rather than opting for rigid diet menus and meal plans, encourage your teen to get by eating less at meals. This does not have to be a significant change --- encourage your children to be more mindful of their eating and when they start feeling full. Because the brain is slow to realize when the stomach is full, your teens can benefit from eating slowly and stopping when they start to feel full.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are high in water content, low in calories and high in vitamins and minerals. They are ideal for helping fill you up while providing your body with nutrients, but most fruits and vegetables will provide only minor amounts of calories. Exercise is important because it contributes to your body's overall health, but regular exercise can burn hundreds of calories in a single workout session. This makes it easy to create a caloric deficit in your body where you are burning more than you consume in a day. When the body runs out of energy from your diet, it uses stored fat, leading to weight loss.

Considerations

Your teen's mental health is of supreme importance when body image and weight are being dealt with. Establish an open line of communication with your teenagers and discuss the dangers of unhealthy dieting. Encourage teens to set easy, manageable weight loss goals, and caution them against resorting to fad diets or other products marketed to desperate dieters. You should also be encouraging of their involvement in sports and other physical activities and provide meals that make it easy for your children to eat healthfully.
