Side Effects of Zonegran

Zonegran, generically known as zonisamide, is used in the treatment of epilepsy. According to Drugs.com, it is a sulfa drug with anticonvulsant effects and is typically used in combination with other anticonvulsant medications to help manage and control seizures. As with many drugs of its kind, Zonegran is accompanied by various side effects, some more severe than others.

Common Side Effects

According to eMedTV.com, the most common side effects are seen in up to 17 percent of patients taking Zonegran. Once you first begin taking your medication, you may find that you suffer from drowsiness, frequent headaches and nausea. You may also experience a loss of appetite, become agitated or irritable or suffer from fatigue.

Less-serious Side Effects

Some side effects are not quite as common but are not deemed serious. These include abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, unusual movement of the eyes, insomnia, problems with speech, double vision, chills and body aches, indigestion, dry mouth, problems with coordination, a burning, tingling or numbness, feeling nervous, a runny nose or a change in tastes.

Serious Side Effects

If you experience any of the following, report them to your doctor immediately, as they may be signs of a health issue requiring prompt attention. They include depression, bruising or bleeding easily, decreased sweating, which may result in heat stroke, becoming agitated or hostile, decreased production of urine, thoughts of suicide, becoming delusional or experiencing hallucinations, worsening of seizures, memory loss and becoming confused.

Rare Side Effects

According to eMedTV.com, less than 1 percent of patients suffer from side effects deemed as rare. These include suffering from a stiff neck, gas, weight gain, the onset of arthritis, suffering from a decreased sex drive, dry skin, impotence, high blood pressure, the development of gallstones, leg cramps, acne, kidney stones and problems with your menstrual cycle.

Signs of an Overdose

An overdose of Zonegran requires emergency medical attention. Signs of an overdose include a slow heart rate, fainting, feeling light-headed and breathing that is slow or shallow.
