A treadmill is a convenient way to squeeze in a cardio workout when the weather isn't cooperating. You can walk, jog or run on a treadmill and most models offer two different options for changing the intensity of your workout: speed and incline. Treadmills have a variety of features depending on the brand and model.

Identification

A treadmill consists of a deck with a moving tread or walking belt, which rotates around rollers at each end of the deck. Depending on the type of treadmill, it may have a motor at the front of the deck with an electronic console that provides feedback about your workout. Some residential treadmills feature a fold-away design so you can store the machine in an upright position to save floor space.

Function

A treadmill allows you to walk, jog or run indoors. Walking is a low-impact, weight-bearing exercise that most individuals can do. Runners and other athletes use treadmills to work out in the comfort of the indoors when it is cold or rainy. A study published in, "The Journal of the American Medical Association" found that individuals on a treadmill used more energy at the same level of perceived exertion, compared to when they used other cardio machines -- such as a stair stepper, rowing ergometer, cross-country skier, Airdyne or cycle ergometer.

Types

Although most treadmills have motors, you can still purchase a manual treadmill. Your foot movement powers a manual treadmill. The belt moves around the deck at the rate you move. A motorized treadmill belt moves on its own power. You adjust the speed of the belt and you have to keep up with it. A newer type of treadmill is an incline trainer. These treadmills have steeper inclines, as high as 40 percent, than standard treadmills.

Features

The features of a treadmill vary by make and model. Most treadmills offer speeds up to 8, 10 or 12 mph and an incline up to 10, 12 or 15 percent. The console provides information on the time, distance, calories burned, speed and incline. Many models have built-in workout programs that automatically adjust the speed and incline settings for you. Other features may include a heart rate sensor, MP3 compatibility, speakers and Wi-Fi capability.
