Pain in the hips and in all joints can be excruciating and a condition with which you may feel you are forced to live. Traditional medicines are not always adequate at treating chronic joint pain. People suffering from pain in the hips and joints may turn to alternative medicines and therapies such as herbs, yoga, meditation or attempting to awaken the kundalini.

What Is Kundalini?

Kundalini is the Indian theory that an untapped source of energy resides in the base of the spine. Adherents of meditative and yogic kundalini therapies believe in working to unleash the power of this energy. The energy is thought to be drawn up through the spine and into the mind, where it can bring enlightenment and vibrant health. This is also sometimes called chakra therapy, since the energy is thought to be drawn through seven chakras, or spiritual meridians, that lie along the spine en route to the brain. Adherents believe the energy, sometimes called shakti, is the key to relieving many of the ills of the body and mind.

How to Harness It

Proponents believe kundalini can be harnessed through an intense meditative practice that involves imagining the meridians along the body, each one with a corresponding color, and envisioning them as open, flowing pathways. It can also be harnessed through kundalini yoga, a practice similar to hatha yoga in which all the postures involve moving and twisting the spine to get the energy flowing through this part of the body.

How Kundalini Can Treat Hip Pain

Meditative kundalini is purported to work by shifting stale energy patterns in your body. If pain and negative energy have built up in your hips, chakra-opening meditation can release it. However, kundalini yoga may be a faster pathway to pain-free hips. Performing the cobra posture, in which you lie on the floor on your stomach and slowly straighten your arms, lifting your upper body from the ground, can relieve cramping in the hips and release the tension that builds up from sitting in a chair all day. Performing the reverse plank pose in which you sit with your legs stretched in front of you and lift your body from the floor using your arms, may also be helpful, according to the Pink Lotus website.

Lifestyle

Though kundalini exercises can be a powerful tool in your hip pain-fighting arsenal, remember that diet and low-impact exercise play a significant role as well. Being overweight puts additional strain on weight-bearing joints such as ankles, knees and hips. Eat a healthful diet and maintain a moderate weight to decrease pain in your joints and overall wear-and-tear on your body.
