Healthy meal plans are often the basis for weight loss. Not only do they help you restrict your calories and eat healthier meals, but they also help you stay away from the temptations of fast food and quick fixes. By creating a meal plan at the beginning of each month, you ensure that you have all of the ingredients on hand to make both you and your family healthy meals that create healthy habits for life.

Counting Calories

Cutting the amount of calories you consume through your daily meals can help you and your family lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Instead of relying on low-fat versions of processed foods, eat naturally low-fat foods on a regular basis by choosing whole foods. Packaged meals can help you restrict your caloric intake, but they are costly and often contain preservatives. You'd be better off taking the time to plan out healthy meals that use whole ingredients like lean meats, vegetables and fruit.

Planning Meals

Planning meals for your whole family can cause problems when you constantly choose meals that your family won't enjoy. In order to plan out your meals on a monthly basis, look for family favorites and ways to change the foods to make them healthier. For instance, if your family loves Chinese food, plan for a healthy stir fry. If your family prefers meatloaf, swap ground sirloin for extra-lean ground beef to save calories. Plan for four or five new meals that your family has never tried and track whether or not they were hits.

Grocery Shopping

One of the most important components of creating meal plans specifically for weight loss is grocery shopping. By having all of the ingredients that you need for healthy, low-calorie meals, you won't be tempted by the occasional call to a pizza delivery business. Create a list from your meal plan and head to the store. Most grocery stores place essentials and whole foods around the perimeter of the store, so avoid the aisles whenever possible, sticking with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean meats.

Avoiding Gimmicks

A variety of companies offer diet meals that you purchase and then have delivered to your door. They can be pricey but work to help you lose weight. Unfortunately, prepackaged diet meals do little to prepare you for eating after the diet. Instead of learning how to plan, shop for and prepare healthy meals, you're back at square one when the diet meals run out. They are a short-term solution at best, so use a calendar to help you plan homemade meals instead.
