Pilates was originally created to help World War I victims rehabilitate, according to TeensHealth. Since then its popularity has soared and been made famous by Hollywood film stars. Pilates is basically a body conditioning program that focuses on creating endurance and flexibility in the body without adding muscle bulk. The exercises are done on a mat and sometimes with the use of exercise equipment.

Some History

Joseph H. Pilates, native to Germany, founded the workout routine. As a child he was often sick and suffered from asthma. He engaged himself in many sports and went on to become a professional athlete. As a nurse, he created the exercises to help injured war victims rehabilitate. A Pilates routine often focuses on strengthening the core, or powerhouse of the body. He based some of the method on yoga and Eastern martial arts. Joseph Pilates felt that connecting the mind with physical movement is vital. A Pilates method focuses on concentration and linking movement with breath.

It focuses on concentrating on proper breathing and alignment so that you can become more in tune with your body. Quality of movement with each routine is emphasized. The mind can therefore learn how to become focused and more in touch with your body. Pilates works on building a strong core in the body. Abdominal muscles may become lean and strong. The main goal of Pilates is to create a sleek physique with toned and lean cut muscles. Pilates is gentle and safe enough for anyone to try, but it also provides enough physical challenge to transform the shape of the body.

To get the most out of your Pilates workout stay focused on each routine and keep your breathing rhythm in sync with each movement. Wear yoga-type clothes so you can feel comfortable. Let your movements be fluid, avoiding stiff or jerky reactions. Get your heart rate going by pairing a Pilates workout with another aerobic exercise.
