Proper footwear is important when lifting weights in the gym. A good shoe supports your ankles and feet, which in turn provides a stable foundation for weight lifting. ExRx.net notes that all the power from the body should be contributing to moving the weight in a controlled manner when weight lifting, and weight lifting shoes help to accomplish that.

Inzer Pillar

The Inzer Pillar weight-lifting shoe offers a unique design that retails for $125 as of February 2011. The entire span of the sole touches the floor, which further stabilizes the foot and creates a strong base, says Inzer Advance Design. Also, the Pillar features two leather and Velcro straps that reach across the foot to keep it from shifting during heavy weight-lifting exercises.

Chuck Taylors

StrongLifts.com considers Chuck Taylors to be the best weight-lifting shoe since they are efficient, durable and inexpensive. The sole is hard, thin and incompressible, which enables you to feel your feet during lifts because they are close to the floor. Also, low-top Chuck Taylors offer full ankle mobility, and high-top Chuck Taylors provide a similar effect if the top portion is left unlaced. This shoe retails between $30 and $50 as of February 2011.

Adidas adiSTAR

Heavy Olympic-style lifts such as power cleans, overhead squats and snatches require a shoe with a sturdy heel. The Adidas adiSTAR has a durable, cushioned heel that was designed to aid in heavy lifts. The heel contains a wooden wedge that offers uncompromising stability, while the perforated leather upper offers ventilation and durability. The adiSTAR includes a rubber outsole that provides great traction, says Shoebacca.com. The Adidas adiSTAR retails between $90 and $130 based on style as of February 2011.

VS Athletics

Lower-body weight-lifting exercises like squats or deadlifts require a shoe with a raised heel, hard sole and plenty of support. The VS Athletics weight-lifting shoe features a leather, reinforced rubber sole, two hook-and-loop straps for additional support, and hard rubber at the bottom of the shoe, says the VS Athletics website. Also, they feature a low top design, which allows for free ankle range of motion. These shoes retail for $75 as of February 2011.
