Individual sports grants were far and few between but seem to be increasing in number compared with a few years ago. The overall health and lack of physical activity in today's youth may be a contributing factor to the increase with a majority of these grants targeting the younger population.
Many nonprofit organizations set up grants to encourage sports and exercise to drive children in the right direction by teaching them confidence, leadership skills, teamwork and the importance of nutrition. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an alarming 17 percent of children and adolescents are overweight or obese. Propelling the nations' youth towards physical activity and healthy lifestyles, the grants offered may help lower this percentage.
LPGA-USGA Girls Golf
The Junior Golfer program is offered to girls ages 7 to 17 through LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Program. More than 6,000 girls who participate at more than 200 sites nationwide. Through this program, participants will learn valuable traits that prepare them for future careers. Coordinators of the program consist of site directors, EWGA members, Girl Scout leaders, volunteers, parentsand a junior advisory board.
Women's Sports Foundation
The main objective for grants offered through the Women's Sports Foundation is to provide girls access to sports despite background or financial capability. Girls' ages 8 to 18 are considered for the grant programs, which are offered nationwide. A number of different grants are offered through this organization, including the Jump Start Grant, which is designed for girls who may not be able to participate in motor sports.
Locate Foundation
Numerous foundations across the country may be willing to sponsor individual athletes for sports grants. Many foundations are specific to age, gender, and sport, so doing the research to find an organization that works for you can pay off.
