The Anabolic Diet is a nutrition plan created by Dr. Mauro DiPasquale. The Anabolic Diet is intended to not only help you lose weight, but also retain or build muscle mass. Although the Anabolic Diet is popular among bodybuilders, EveryDiet.org notes that it can be used by anyone. Consult a doctor before beginning this or any other diet plan.
Anabolic Diet Overview
The Anabolic Diet is intended to produce significant changes in body composition without the use of drugs. The Anabolic Diet is broken up into two different menus: weekday foods and weekend foods. On weekdays, you should keep protein and fat intake high, consuming vegetables as your only direct carbohydrate source. On weekends, you should reduce your protein and fat intake, consuming mainly carbohydrates. StrongLifts.com notes that before you begin this eating schedule, you need to avoid carbohydrates for 12 days so your body can adapt to using fat for energy.
Saturated Fats
In his book "The Anabolic Diet," Dr. Mauro DiPasquale notes that saturated fat intake is acceptable on the Anabolic Diet, and he recommends consuming red meat, full-fat cheeses and eggs, which all contain saturated fat. This may be beneficial, as bodybuilding expert Mike Roussell explains that saturated fat intake may increase levels of testosterone, a muscle-building hormone.
Mononsaturated Fats
You can also consume monounsaturated fats on the Anabolic Diet. Monunsaturated fats can be found in olive oil, canola oil, sesame oil, and nuts. To boost your monounsaturated fat intake on the Anabolic Diet, you can cook meat and vegetables in olive oil or consume almonds and peanuts. The American Heart Association explains that these fats may improve your cholesterol levels.
Polyunsaturated Fats
Polyunsaturated fats may be effective choices for the Anabolic Diet, as many foods containing these fats are also high in protein, such as salmon and trout. The American Heart Association notes that corn oil, walnuts and sunflower seeds are also rich in polyunsaturated fats, which provide your body with essential fatty acids it can't produce on its own.
