Many people experience sleeping problems from time to time, particularly because of stress, illness or injury. However, if you have trouble either falling or staying asleep three nights or more during a week, you may have insomnia. Doing relaxation exercises and establishing a sleep routine may help alleviate sleeping difficulties. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe a short course of sleeping pills. Some herbs may also aid relaxation and help you sleep, although you should talk to your doctor before using them.
Properties
Kava is a member of the pepper family that has been used as a medicinal remedy for centuries. Also known as Piper methysticum, kava is used to treat anxiety, insomnia and menopausal symptoms. Valerian may have a soothing effect, and as such, is often used to treat stress-related disorders, including sleeping problems. Valerian may even lessen the need for prescription sleeping tablets.
Administration
Kava and valerian may be taken as a tea, or you may prefer to take these herbs in capsules or tablets. A suggested dose range for kava is between 100mg to 250mg of a standardized extract taken up to three times daily to aid relaxation. Alternatively, you may wish to take 200mg to 400mg of a standardized extract of valerian at bed time to promote sleep. Check with your doctor or pharmacist that these dosages are appropriate for you.
Safety and Side Effects
Kava not be safe. This is because it may cause liver damage and may even lead to liver failure. It may also cause dystonia, a condition characterized by abnormal muscle spasms. Short-term valerian use is likely safe, although it may cause side effects including headache and uneasiness. You may also find that you feel drowsy the morning after taking valerian.
Contraindications
Don't use either of these herbs if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not take them alongside other drugs that have a sedating effect. Also avoid alcohol while taking valerian as it may make you feel too sleepy. Don't use kava if you have liver disease or Parkinson's disease. As both these herbs may make you feel drowsy, avoid taking them before driving or operating dangerous machinery.
