Not everyone enjoys having a job that confines them to a desk all day. Careers that require physical fitness and activity make it easier to be healthy and to get exercise on the job. Many of these jobs help others as well. If you have are in good shape, you may be well-suited to a career that requires physical activity and fitness.
Fitness Trainer
Although most people know that they need to exercise, not everyone knows how to do so properly. As a fitness trainer you can experience the rewards of helping others get in shape. Fitness trainers often need certifications, such as from the American Council on Exercise or American Fitness Professionals and Associates. An undergraduate degree in kinesiology or exercise science can be helpful, but is not always required. Fitness trainers can be employed by health clubs or gyms, in corporate wellness systems or in private practice.
Professional Athlete
Professional athletes must be in excellent physical condition to compete. Although openings on major-league teams are limited, many athletes make a living on minor-league teams. Other qualities needed for professional athletes include stamina, competitiveness and natural talent.
Nutritionist or Dietitian
Nutritionists and dietitians have a passion for physical fitness and wellness, particularly a healthy diet. Nutritionists have to set a good example of a healthy and fit lifestyle for their clients. Nutritionists or dietitians can work for hospitals, nursing homes, health insurance systems or in private practice. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dietitians and nutritionists must have at least a bachelor's degree plus additional certifications as required by their states.
Firefighters
Firefighters must be in good physical shape to handle the demands of fighting fires. Firefighters lift and carry hoses and equipment that can weight up to 60 pounds. They rescue people from fires and operate chainsaws. Firefighters must have excellent aerobic fitness to withstand fiery environments where oxygen is limited. Most fire departments require workers to pass a physical examination.
