Volleyball is sometimes thought of as a girl's sport, but most schools have teams for boys as well. Volleyball can be an effective way to get boys interested in sports. Whether it's recreational or competitive, boys' volleyball offers a variety of benefits.

Teamwork

Teamwork is critical to success on the volleyball court. While most team sports require a high degree of cooperation, volleyball is a sport that you cannot play without the full cooperation of the team at any time. This makes for an ideal opportunity to teach boys about teamwork and playing together. While other sports often have a clear star on the field or the court, in volleyball all players are rotated and treated equally. Boys will learn more about sportsmanship, encouragement and playing as part of a team.

Confidence

Some schools are so sports-driven that if your child doesn't play on a sports team, he mogjt fly under the radar for other opportunities. Volleyball is often offered competitively against other schools as well as an intramural sport between students at the same school. Playing recreationally with less pressure can give boys the confidence he needs in other areas of his life, whether it's joining other sports or clubs to blossoming socially among his peers.

Adult Relationships

Until boys have the opportunity to join a team, most of their adult interactions are limited to relatives and teachers. The relationship they'll form with a coach is different because the coach and the student are working toward similar goals. Learning to respond to, respect and work with a coach can give boys the foundation for interacting with other adults as well. Interacting with a coach can help him learn to better interact with the other adults in his life, be they teachers or members of your own family.

Physical Activity

With nearly 20 percent of all children and teens, as of 2010, considered obese, giving boys the opportunity to stay active using volleyball can help increase their level of physical activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and volleyball practice and games can help fulfill that requirement. Encouraging a sport such as volleyball can help boys spend less time sitting around.
