According to Edgar Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment, Kundalini is a meditation or yoga process based in Eastern thought. Kundalini energy is the life force within the body and is thought of as a serpent-like energy that lies dormant until awoken. Once awoken, its energy travels up the body through the "chakras," or energetic centers of the body.
Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga, inspired by the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, bases its philosophy on understanding and awakening Kundalini energy. Yogi Bhajan believed happiness was everyone's birthright and that the teachings should give people tools to live a more whole life. Bhajan was born in India in 1929 and came to master the process of Kundalini as a teenager. Some thought the yoga postures and breathing techniques should be kept secret, but Bhajan believed everyone should be able to experience them. His teachings influenced many, eventually spreading to the West where he formed organizations to spread his message.
Strengthening Breath
The Association for Research and Enlightenment shares Kundalini meditation techniques, which are done through prayer and breathing exercises. Taking hold of the breath and realizing its power are essential to this process. Mantras and repeating affirmations also help to focus the mind on the eternal power in all things. One way to realize the power of the breath is to breathe into the right nostril, closing the left nostril lightly with a finger. Exhalations are done through the mouth. This is repeated three times and then done again on the other side by breathing into the left nostril, but instead exhaling through the right nostril. Do not try this if you feel lightheaded or uncomfortable.
Kundalini Awoken
According to the "Tradition of the Himalayan," kundalini awoken is a process for everyone, and is characterized by feelings of joy and peace. It can be awakened through physical yoga postures, vigorous breathing exercises, meditation and mantras, or chants, to divine power in things. Some signs of kundalini awoken include feeling states of bliss, intense heat in the spine and electric flows of energy.
Kundalini Rising
The "Tradition of the Himalayan" site shares it is important for the Kundalini energy to rise up through the seven chakras. This can be done through the sushumna channel, or core energetic channel that runs through the center of the body close to the spine. The seven chakras begin at the base of the spine, up to the crown chakra, which is at the top of the head. As the Kundalini energy rises, it fills each chakra before moving onto the next.
