Once you've had your baby, it's time to reclaim the body that you gave up for the last nine months. Unfortunately, it's a task that's easier said than done when you add in the pressure and sleep deprivation of a new baby. You may not be eating or exercising in a way conducive to weight loss. By making a plan to work with your baby's schedule, you can beat the baby bulge by giving yourself time to finally slim back down to your pre-baby weight.

Six Week Checkup

Avoid trying to lose weight for the first six weeks after having your baby. While it's understandable that you may feel anxious to hit the gym, it's important that you give your body ample time to heal and recover after the birth. If you've had a c-section, it's especially important that you take six weeks to allow your incision to heal. Once your OB gives you a checkup and a go ahead, it's finally safe to follow a healthy diet and exercise plan to facilitate weight loss.

Breastfeeding

If you've chosen to breastfeed, your weight loss journey may be slightly different than a mother who has chosen to bottle feed. Breastfeeding burns calories, so you may actually lose weight faster. Just ensure that you give yourself six weeks to build up a good milk supply before you alter your diet so your baby's nutrition isn't affected in any way. You may find that you're hungrier while breastfeeding, so eat to your appetite and choose healthier snacks to stay energized and satiated while nursing.

Healthy Diet

Restricting your calories is an effective way to lose weight. Unfortunately, your new schedule and the demands of meeting your newborn baby's needs may have you struggling to make dinner, let alone count calories. Eating fast food or erratic meals can stall your weight loss. Instead, keep nutritious snacks and small meals on hand so you're never left feeling hungry. By continually supplying your body with energy, you'll rev up your metabolism to burn more fat and calories for better results.

Postpartum Exercise

If you were somewhat of a gym rat before your pregnancy, you may find that your exercise schedule changes around the schedule of your baby. Not having time to exercise is a common complaint and one that stops many women from burning calories and losing baby weight. If you're not comfortable leaving your baby with a sitter, incorporate her in your exercise routine. Baby yoga, water aerobics and stroller walking can all help you tone your body and burn calories while still allowing you to care for your baby without interrupting your weight loss progress.
