Major Healthy Foods Containing Folic Acid

Folic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin. Water-soluble vitamins only stay in the body for a short amount of time and they need to be constantly replaced. Women who are pregnant need to make sure they keep their daily intake up to avoid birth defects. Folic acid can be found in a supplement form or you can get it through various healthy foods.

Meats

Meats are high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Meats are not high in folic acid, but the livers and kidneys are. Chicken giblets are also high in folic acid.

Eggs

Eggs are high in protein, amino acids, cholesterol and folic acid. They are also low in carbohydrates and are often used in a high-protein diet. Eggs can be made scrambled, hard boiled, soft boiled, poached, deviled or fried.

Fruits

Fruits are high in water, fiber, natural sugar, carbohydrates and they are low in fat. Bananas, peaches, oranges, cantaloupe, strawberries, blackberries and papaya are all high in folic acid.

Vegetables

Vegetables are similar to fruits because they are highly composed of water, are high in fiber and are low in calories. Spinach, broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, brussels sprouts, potatoes, sweet potatoes and beetroot are all high in folic acid.

Legumes

Legumes have seeds that have an exterior pod covering them. They are high in fiber, protein and complex carbohydrates. Dried beans, soy beans, split peas, pinto beans, garbanzo beans, peanuts and lentils are examples of legumes that are high in folic acid.

Wholoe Grains

Whole grains are high in fiber, carbohydrates and are low in fat. Barley, bulgur, millet and rice are grains that are high in folic acid. Products made from whole grains are also high in folic acid, such as pasta, bread, muffins, rolls, crusts and tortillas. Fortified cereal can also be high in folic acid.
