Byetta, also known as exenatide, is a common medication used for the treatment of a variety of anxiety disorders such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic attacks and depression. Byetta has been known to increase irritability and anger in patients who are dealing anxiety issues. The drug is also prescribed to individuals with type-2 diabetes for help regulating blood sugar levels in the blood. As with any medication, side effects are possible and complaints may vary, depending on the general age and health of the person taking the medication, as well as dosage strength.
Kidney Problems
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently released a report stating that Byetta has serious side effects, which may affect kidney health, leading to potential kidney failure in some individuals. Byetta has also been known to increase a sense of agitation, anxiety and jitters, as well as confusion and anger in those taking the medication for mental health issues, such as those undergoing treatment for anxiety and panic attack disorders.
Inflammation
The makers of Byetta injections state that inflammation of the pancreas (called pancreatitis) is possible in individuals with a history of drinking or high cholesterol (triglyceride) levels.
Decreased Blood Sugar
Byetta manufacturers state that individuals who already have low blood sugar levels (commonly called hypoglycemia) may experience a further drop in those levels with use of Byetta.
Mild Side Effects
Individuals taking Byetta for anxiety or diabetes may experience higher levels of anxiety, commonly felt as jitters, headache, nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and mild to moderate abdominal pain.
