According to the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, 72.3 percent of men have a body mass index that is considered to be overweight. Being overweight derives from consuming too many calories and not moving enough. Finding your BMI will help you realize where you fall in terms of your weight.
Body Mass Index
The Body Mass Index, BMI, was designed as a tool to help people determine if they fell into a healthy weight range based on their height. The BMI uses both your weight and height to determine if you are in a healthy weight range, overweight range or obese weight range. Finding your BMI is as simple as taking your weight in pounds and multiplying it by 703, then dividing that number by your height in inches. Take that number and divide it by your height in inches again.
The Numbers
A healthy BMI for a man is between 18.5 and 24.5. An overweight BMI is between 25 and 29.9 and an obese BMI is over 30. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Dr. Steven Hall found the average BMI of men between ages 20 and 29 is 24.5. Men between the ages of 30 and 39 is 25.9 and men over 40 are over 26.8.
Healthy Lifestyle
Choosing to eat healthy foods in correct portion sizes will help you maintain a healthy weight. Foods like lean meats, whole grains, low fat dairy, fruits and vegetables all will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to keep a healthy weight. Regular exercise, five days a week for 30 minutes a day, will help you burn calories to keep your weight in a healthy weight range.
Health Risks
An overweight or obese weight range places you at a higher risk for health problems. Health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, stroke, certain cancers and depression can often be the result of having a high BMI. These problems can be prevented by getting rid of excess fat from your body.
