The P90X is one of the best-selling fitness programs on the market since its introduction in 2004. Led by fitness professional Tony Horton, P90X is used to build and shape your muscles while also providing a full range of aerobic exercises for losing weight and building health and stamina. Although the initial investment can be pricey, with the full set costing from $120 and up, as of February 2011, the results displayed by the program continue to attract new users.

Exercises

The P90X consists of 12 exercise routines on DVDs. Exercises and areas covered include chest and back, plyometrics, shoulders and arms, yoga, legs and back, kenpo, core synergistics, chest, shoulders, triceps, back, biceps, cardio and ab ripper. Each DVD comes with an introduction and instructions on how to do each exercise, as well as instruction on how to simplify or intensify each exercise to meet your individual needs.

Variations

There are three versions of P90X that can be performed using the same DVD set. Each allows you to change your workout to cater specifically to your desired results. The P90X classic version is the most common and consists of a one-hour workout each day, according to the schedule in the P90X manual. The doubles version changes this by adding an extra cardio session and doubling your time commitment with a goal of increasing your overall results. The P90X lean version reduces the amount of strength-training sessions and increases aerobic workouts for those looking for more of a lean look.

Benefits

The P90X works by muscle confusion and calorie burning. With each DVD focusing on separate workouts, your body gets the benefits of both an aerobic and strength-training workout. Aerobic benefits of P90X include weight loss and strengthening of the heart and lung capacity. Strength-training benefits include stronger muscles, which in turn allow your body to burn calories more efficiently. The exercises included in the P90X regimen can help decrease your risk for a variety of health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, stroke and even some forms of cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Safety

The P90X is an extreme workout regimen and should be approached with caution if you are new to regular exercise. Take the included P90X fit test to ensure you are healthy enough to go through the entire exercise system without injury. If you feel nauseous, light-headed, dizzy or have pain of any kind when performing the P90X, pause the DVD or reduce your intensity level by opting for a lighter weight or slowing down your reps. Consult your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen.
