The Side Effects of Inderal

Inderal is a brand name of a medication (generic name propranolol) prescribed with or without other drugs to control hypertension or high blood pressure. It also may be part of treatment for irregular heartbeats, angina or chest pain that is severe, a tumor of the adrenal gland called pheochromocytoma, migraines, tremors or hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, which is a heart muscle that has become uncommonly thick. It is available as a pill, extended release capsule or solution.

Central Nervous System

The use of Inderal by some people may result in side effects in the central nervous system. These types of effects are serious. Report them to your doctor. They include lethargy, fatigue, abnormal dreams that are vivid, lightheadedness, loss or memory, confusion about what time it is and where you are, insomnia, depression and bodily weakness.

Cardiovascular System

Other serious side effects can affect your cardiovascular system. These are serious and may be potentially life threatening. Tell your doctor about them immediately. They include congestive heart failure, low blood pressure or hypotension, a decrease in how fast your heart beats, tingling, numbness, burning, pricking or creeping sensations on the hands called paresthesia or an increase in atrioventricular---upper and lower heart---blockage.

Gastrointestinal

Propranolol in the form of Inderal also may induce some side effects in the gastrointestinal system. These also are serious side effects requiring medical help, so tell your doctor if you get any of them. They include constipation, diarrhea, nausea, cramps in the abdomen and vomiting.

Other Serious Side Effects

According to the Mayo Clinic, most side effects from Inderal usage are serious, but they also may be rare. These other types of effects include skin blisters or peeling, nosebleeds, vision loss or blurring, nasal congestion, veins in the neck that become dilated, headaches, seeing lights with halos, irregular breathing, inability to speak, paranoia, moods that change quickly, bleeding rectally, night blindness, negativism, emotional overreacting, difficulties breathing or swallowing, hallucinations, tunnel vision, gaining weight or chest tightness.

Non-Serious

Some Inderal side effects will vanish over time as you use the drug more. These aren't serious. Tell your doctor about them if they persist. These include abnormal dreams that are vivid, eye dryness, abnormal dullness, indigestion, uncommon drowsiness, weakness in the muscles, sluggish feelings, insomnia and cramps in the stomach.
