Yoga and workout pants are often worn outside of the gym, filling in as comfortable lounge or casual wear. They are made of classic cotton or high-tech fibers in various styles and lengths. The best yoga pants function well on the mat in class and still flatter as you pick up the kids or run errands.
Styles
Stores carry yoga and workout pants in baggy slouchy styles, bootcut shapes and legging looks. Opt for a slender straight cut or a bootcut yoga pants for the most figure-flattering choice. While stretch fabrics are typical, waistbands can be flat elastic, gathered elastic or a wide, stretchy fold-over band. Look for a flat elastic or fold-over waistband for a tummy-flattening and slimming fit. Gathered, sweatpant-style elastic will add bulk through your midsection.
Fabrics
Choose workout pants with some stretch, either in the form of a cotton spandex or cotton and lycra blend for everyday workouts. The stretch fabric will keep your yoga pants from stretching or bagging out of shape, and breathable cotton is cool and comfortable. If you're heading for a hard workout or a hot yoga class, skip the cotton altogether and opt for wicking fabrics that pull sweat away from your skin for comfort.
Length and Fit
You can find short, regular and long inseam lengths in yoga pants. Expect workout pants to be hemmed for bare feet or a standard sneaker-style shoe, so they won't be as long as comparable jeans or trousers. Your pants should not be too long when you're barefoot to avoid tripping during your workout. You can also find capri-length workout pants, ranging from just below the knee to just below the calf muscle. Make sure your workout pants fit snugly if you'll be doing yoga inversions or similar exercises. Save looser workout wear for the treadmill or elliptical trainer.
Care
Workout wear is designed for hard use and will stand up to machine washing and drying. Keep in mind that knits, particularly knits with some stretch, may last longer if you skip the dryer and hang them to dry. Avoid fabric softener sheets or liquids if you have high-tech wicking fabrics, and don't wash your yoga pants with the towels to reduce pilling and wear.
