If you suffer from persistent facial redness every time you exercise, it can have a negative effect on your motivation to work out. Getting a red face while exercising can have several causes, and therefore requires different solutions. Consult a doctor or dermatologist for advice concerning any new facial symptoms that manifest during exercise.
Climate Control
The temperature and relative humidity of your exercise environment can affect the redness of your face. Overheating in an indoor gym or outdoors can increase the amount you sweat and increased sweating in the face can lead to increased redness. Direct sunlight during exercise can increase facial heat, or cause sunburn. High humidity levels usually cause you to sweat more profusely while dry air can cause dry and itchy skin.
Circulation
When you exercise at an aerobic level of intensity, the blood circulation in your body changes. As your heart rate and breathing rate increase, blood is pumped more quickly around your body. In addition, the blood vessels in your body and your face may dilate. If your blood vessels are close to the surface of your face, dilation and increased blood circulation can lead to an appearance of red skin on the face.
Dermatological Conditions
Red facial skin is a symptom common in many dermatological conditions. Because the symptoms of these conditions are similar, yet treatment methods differ, it is important to obtain a diagnosis from a doctor before attempting to treat any skin condition. A condition that causes facial redness is called roseacea. Symptoms of roseacea include a red and itchy face, or a sensation of burning on the skin. Roseacea symptoms are commonly exacerbated by exercise.
Prevention/Solution
You can reduce the likelihood of suffering facial redness during exercise by addressing the environmental, dermatological and emotional factors that might contribute to the problem. Ensure you are working out in an environment that has a comfortable humidity level and temperature. Keep hydrated throughout your workout, and moisturize your skin well. Avoid food and drink that dilates the blood vessels of the face, including anything spicy, alcohol and hot drinks. Stress or feelings of awkwardness can also increase redness and blushing in the face, so try to feel comfortable physically and emotionally while working out.
