Fibromyalgia disorder is characterized by chronic widespread muscle pain and fatigue. People with fibromyalgia have tender points on various parts of the body. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the cause of fibromyalgia pain is unknown, but it may be related to the nervous system. An alternative treatment used for fibromyalgia pain is 5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan. The supplement should only be used under the supervision of a doctor.
Function
People with fibromyalgia pain may have low serotonin levels in their bodies. According to the Franklin Institute, the lower serotonin levels can increase your sensitivity to pain. 5-HTP is a chemical that is derived from an amino acid called tryptophan. In the body, 5-HTP is converted into serotonin. Taking 5-HTP increases serotonin levels in the body, which may reduce pain associated with fibromyalgia.
Research
According to UMMC, 5-HTP can reduce pain associated with fibromyalgia. The New York University Langone Medical Center explains that one double- blind study found that 50 people with fibromyalgia taking 300 mg of 5-HTP for 30 days experienced less pain, compared to those taking placebo. Similarly, the University of Michigan Health System cites that taking 100 mg of 5-HTP orally three times a day may relieve pain associated with fibromyalgia.
Risks
Taking 5-HTP may help with fibromyalgia pain, but it has some risks. According to MedlinePlus, some people who have taken 5-HTP have suffered with eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome, or EMS. The syndrome is characterized by blood abnormalities and muscle tenderness.
Safety
A high dosage of 5-HTP can be toxic to the brain. According to MedlinePlus, the appropriate dosage of 5-HTP depends on your age, health and other conditions. So, consult your doctor before taking 5-HTP supplements for fibromyalgia pain.
