Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine medication that serves to depress your central nervous system. This results in a decrease in anxiety. The University of Maryland Medical Center does not report any drug interactions with alprazolam.
Phenylalanine is an amino acid contained within aspartame and certain foods. Phenylalanine may help treat chronic pain, vitiligo and mental depression. While researchers study these possibilities, little evidence exists to prove the supplement has these desired effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved phenylalanine as a medicine. Phenylalanine does not appear to have side effects unless you have rare medical conditions. Talk with your physician before taking alprazolam or phenylalanine.
Mental Problems
Although you may take alprazolam to help combat anxiety related to depression, the drug may cause some serious mental side effects. For example, you may have problems with your memory and become forgetful, MayoClinic.com reports. The drug may make you feel discouraged, empty, sad and irritable. You also may become less interested in things you once loved. If you or your family members or friends notice any of these side effects, speak with your doctor immediately.
Balance Problems
As alprazolam depresses your central nervous system for its desired effect, it also may induce balance problems. You may become clumsy, uncoordinated or move unsteadily when using this drug. You may not have complete control over your muscle movements. Seek immediate medical attention if these problems occur.
Seizures
You may experience seizures when you take alprazolam, Drugs.com reports. Although seizures most often happen in people with epilepsy, the changes in your central nervous system brought about by alprazolam use may cause the same type of electrical misfiring in your brain. A family member or friend must get you to an emergency room immediately if you suffer a seizure.
Hallucinations and Hostility
When you use alprazolam, you may see things that do not exist. These are called hallucinations. Hallucinations also may manifest as auditory or sensory phantoms. You also may become hostile toward those around you without any apparent reason. Again, immediate medical help is necessary for these side effects.
